This study investigated the use of five indicators from Transdisciplinary Play-Based Assessment as a valid way of screening children at risk of developing social and emotional problems. Participants were 26 children four to five years of age who entered kindergarten the following school year. The children were given the Personal-Social scale of the Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI) and the Play-Based Indicators Record Sheet (PBIRS). Results indicated the PBIRS was an effective way of screening preschool children when it was filled out by the classroom teacher rather than a teacher's aid. Any one of the three subtests of the Personal-Social BDI could be used as a good screening tool; however, the PBIRS is shorter, faster, and easier to administer.
