This study explored the attitudes of researchers working in the field of education towards open access publishing venues. Following a Grounded Theory-based approach, interviews and questionnaires were used to gather data on the attitudes of eighteen members of the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta towards open access journals, e-print servers, and particularly institutional repositories. In addition, participants were queried about their prior publishing experience, their publishing preferences, and their level of satisfaction with the current academic publishing system. Findings suggest that while participants indicated a general interest in open access to scholarly literature and felt that open access publishing models have become viable alternatives to the traditional system in some areas, particularly specific science disciplines, they do not adequately address the needs and concerns of researchers working in areas such as education with regards to quality control through peer review and their acceptance by faculty review committees.
