As numbers of female amateur hockey players rapidly increase in Canada, so does the level of competition. This investigation of influences shaping identity formation in adolescent elite hockey players is drawn from competitors in the first female division of the 2004 Mac's Midget AAA Tournament. Survey and interview data were collected from a Calgary-based cohort sample with a 26% (15 of 57) response rate. Results indicated that convergent personal identity influences among all participants include having self-confidence, supportive relationships and relevant future plans but some participants expressed conflicts about gender identity formation within a male-oriented sport. As a result of conducting this research while teaching competitive female athletes in an alternative high school setting, I realize educational leaders can play an important role in developing female-focused curricula and sport programs to facilitate personal and gender development among such elite cohorts but future research with expanded samples is necessary.
