Relationship multiplexity: Effects on sales growth and volatility from a customer.

Drawing on social network theory, this dissertation proposes that relationship multiplexity, i.e., the number of diverse ties between a supplier and a customer not-only enhances growth in sales to a customer, but also lowers volatility in sales to that customer. To test this proposition, a panel data set is compiled across eleven industries from a variety of secondary data sources. The data are analyzed using a Generalized Method of Moments estimation procedure to account for unobservable factors and endogeneity issues. Results strongly indicate that relationship multiplexity is a valuable market-based asset that enhances sales growth and reduces sales volatility. Contingency analyses of customer-related factors indicate that the effects of relationship multiplexity on sales growth and sales volatility are weak if the customer sales as a percentage of supplier revenues are low. In contrast, the effects of relationship multiplexity on sales volatility are stronger when competitive intensity in customer industry is high.
