I Ching, an ancient Chinese classic of wisdom, is originally used for divination. As a book of philosophy, it has attracted widespread scholarly attention from top-tier sinologists. While it may seem surprising that composers are inspired by something as far-fetched as the I Ching , John Cage, Chou Wen Chung and Zhao Xiao Sheng, contemporary art-music composers of divergent cultural and aesthetic backgrounds, all derived novel compositional strategies from it. Previous research investigated the relationship between the music of individual composers and the I Ching. In contrast, I examine comparatively the divergent ways their compositional approaches related to the oracle book and delve into factors that might have led them to learn from the I Ching differently. The findings are then drawn upon to reflect more broadly on the music-theoretical thinking of their times.
