In most cases, high precision bores are machined with boring bars since the precision obtained through orbital milling on traditional CNC machine-tools (ball screw) is not within specified tolerances. A boring bar can only machine one diameter thus having to use different boring bars for different diameters. Furthermore, a low machining feed has to be applied for a boring bar to avoid poor material removal.;The specific goal of this project is the characterization of a linear motor drive CNC machine-tool during high speed orbital milling of light alloys. This characterization is conducted to determine whether the precision of this machining process is similar to the one obtained with boring bars, thus allowing boring bars to be replaced with orbital milling. This means that it would be possible to machine a multitude of bores (with different diameters) with a single tool through high speed orbital milling. Machining time and tool inventory would be considerably reduced and only a single tool change would be needed. To reach this goal, the behaviour of a linear motor drive CNC machine-tool during high speed orbital milling of light alloys is compared to the behaviour of a ball screw CNC machine-tool during high speed orbital milling of light alloys.
