This study explored whether the origin of the new CEO has an impact on the composition of the top management team (TMT) after the succession of the CEO. Taking theoretical frameworks of similarity-attraction (Byrne. 1971) and organizational demography (Pfeffer, 1983), this study explored the impact of the CEO origin on post-succession TMT overall, age, education, and functional background homogeneities. The results show that the origin of the CEO is not a good predictor of post-succession TMT overall, education, and functional background homogeneities but is related to post-succession TMT age homogeneity. The findings also show that when the new CEO is also elected the chairman of the board of directors, it results in higher TMT overall homogeneity. Additionally, I found that when the new CEO is elected to the post of the chairman of the board and comes from outside the organization, the new CEO tends to surround himself with TMT members who are similar in terms of age and functional background but not in educational background. Another finding shows that when pre-succession firm performance is poor and the firm hires the new CEO from outside it leads to higher TMT overall, educational and functional background homogeneities but not TMT age homogeneity. This study provides support for the similarity-attraction paradigm that under certain circumstances, TMTs tend to become homogenous.
