A fiber based optic system is used to combine multiphoton microscopy (MPM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) into a single platform. A fiber-based all-normal-dispersion pulsed laser simultaneously provides short pulses necessary for efficient multiphoton excitation and the broad bandwidth required for high-resolution OCT. Different origins of contrasts have been introduced due to the different mechanisms of imaging, and a complementary imaging could thus be achieved combining functional and structural information provided simultaneously by the combined system. The fiber-based design of the entire system, including the ultrafast fiber laser source it uses, makes the combined MPM/OCT imaging platform low-cost, compact and requiring less maintenance.
