Elimination of feedback wiring, reduction of maintenance costs, and increased reliability have led to the research field of sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors. This thesis presents sensorless control of a permanent magnet synchronous motors with nonlinear filtering via an extended Kalman filter. Through field oriented control, the torque and flux are independently controlled using the estimated values from the extended Kalman filter. Estimated values include the stator currents, rotor angle, and mechanical speed. Through the output of space vector pulse width modulation, the field oriented control drives the permanent magnet synchronous motor to achieve the control objectives. The analysis for the work completed in this thesis was simulated using MATLAB, and compared with a hardware implementation.
