摘要

Self-control is an important predictor of successful decision-making. Based on Emotion Goal Theory, concerning the relationship between desired emotions and behavior, we propose a new factor that may contribute to self-control ability: different levels of "emotion goals" or desires to experience pride and pleasure in daily life. Specifically, we expect that the strength of an individual's pride goal should be positively related to self-control ability because successful self-control often leads to the experience of pride, and may therefore be motivated by the desire to experience pride. Additionally, we predict that pleasure goal strength should be negatively related to self-control ability because self-control failures often lead to the experience of hedonic pleasure, and may therefore be motivated by the desire to experience pleasure. In study 1, we describe the development of a measure of Pride and Pleasure Emotion Goals (PPEG). In studies 2 and 3, consistent with our predictions, pride goal strength predicts successful self-control, but pleasure goal strength predicts poor self-control. In study 4, induced goals to experience pride and pleasure influence self-control ability in the same manner as assessed pride and pleasure goals. Finally, in study 5, the emotion goal to experience pride is differentiated from the conceptually related behavioral goal to achieve. Only pride goal strength (and not achievement goal strength) predicts performance on a behavioral measure of self-control. These findings suggest that emotion goals to experience pride and pleasure may be important determinants of self-control ability.
