摘要

A serious problem in schools today is that students in middle school develop low motivation, negative attitudes and a lack of interest in the subject of mathematics. Yet, the bulk of mathematic research tends to focus on achievement at the high school level. This qualitative study examines motivation in five eighth grade classrooms. It also investigates the motivational benefits of implementing cooperative learning at the middle school level, an instructional method that is more widely used at the elementary level. Extensive observations, analysis of student work and student responses were undertaken to investigate how middle school students in my classes were motivated in mathematics and what degree of positive motivation occurred within cooperative learning activities. The data collected indicates that in my classroom, I had to understand the needs of specific students, since motivation was not the same for every student.
