The biomechanics of intact, osteoporotic vertebra subjected to prophylactic vertebroplasty was studied. Both a numerical and experimental approach was used in the investigation. The parameters that were expected to be of paramount importance included initial bone density, injected cement amount and location. The study was unique in its goals to identify the indications for treatment as well as the optimal values for previously undefined preventative treatment parameters. The strength of osteoporotic vertebra was significantly improved with injected cement volumes near 20%. Cement leakage was noted at these levels particularly for experimental samples with near-normal density levels. The ability to restore stiffness to the vertebral body was not conclusive. Cement location did not greatly affect the strength or stiffness results. Samples of very low density and poor shell condition appear to receive maximum therapeutic benefit from the procedure.
