In an effort to explore the ability of microorganisms to produce ethanol from diluted hydrolysates derived from sugar maple and Jerusalem artichoke, fermentations were performed that utilized various pretreatment and sterilization techniques in order to maximize ethanol production and sugar consumption by the fermentative microbe, Zymomonas mobilis 8b. Fermentation conditions of 30°C, pH 6.0 with brief agitation every 24 hours were constants in every experiment. Z. mobilis produced ethanol most efficiently from 50% dilutions of Ca (OH)2 hydrolysate sterilized with low temperature (80°C) autoclave treatment. This treatment resulted in peak ethanol production (24.78 +/- 1.8 g/L) and the most efficient xylose consumption (0.78 of available xylose consumed) compared to other treatments. Efficiency of sugar consumption and ethanol production (27.36 g/L and 19.16 g/L) in the 20 mL samples were supported by 1L fermentations under the same conditions.
