摘要

Design codes and standards undergo continuous review, with significant changes occurring every few years. Changes in these necessitate changes to all corresponding design aids. The objective of the research is to develop techniques that make it possible for computer-based design aids to adapt more readily to code and standard changes.; This thesis has considered clause 13 of the CAN/CSA-S16.1 and some of its design aids in the Handbook of Steel Construction. An easy to modify computer program to automatically generate the Beam Selection Tables was constructed, as were a few other computer aids. Even though only a few clauses of the Canadian steel standard were used as examples, the techniques that were developed are usable for other clauses, codes and standards. The effects of future changes were simulated by applying the changes in the standard and Handbook over the past 20 years.
