The research problem for this study was that it is possible that the present work environment hinders positive outcomes for Black males' career growth, development, and promotion in the profession of engineering. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the work environment perceived to either facilitate or hinder positive outcomes for Black males' career growth, development and promotion in the profession of engineering. Furthermore, the goal was to explore the job support perceived by Black males in the engineering profession in order to gain a better understanding of the issues facing Black male engineers in their workplace. Likewise, the methodology employed was exploratory research, which consisted of the Work Environment Inventory of job support (WEI), a validated measurement for understanding perceived job support within the workplace; and, a self-generated demographic questionnaire, which was utilized to identify systematic relations between the demographic variables of the sample. Moreover, Black male engineers (N = 121) that graduated from Howard University with an engineering degree and who occupy lower, middle and upper level engineering positions in corporate America were the sample used in the study. Consequently, the results of the investigation confirmed that the present work environment hinders positive outcomes for Black males' career growth, development, and promotion in the profession of engineering. In addition, the results demonstrated that Black male engineers perceive the job support in their work environment as being inadequate. As well, the study hypothesized that the perception Black male engineers have regarding the job support in their work environment may perhaps correlate to their demographic makeup. Lastly recommendations that derived directly from the study findings along with future research recommendations are offered.
