摘要

Physical activity has been documented as a protective factor against the development of chronic diseases. Little is known, however, about the determinants of physical activity in African-American female adolescents and female primary caregiver. There is limited research on cultural determinants and African-American parental influences on their youth's levels of physical activity. This study expands on past research by examining cultural determinants of physical activity in 101 healthy female youth (ages 11--16 years) and their female primary caregivers (ages 32--56 years). This study examined the measurement of physical activity, the influence of general cognitive beliefs and attitudes on physical activity, the cultural influences that affect engaging in physical activity, and the intergenerational linkages of beliefs and attitudes about physical activity between the African-American adolescent females and their primary female caregiver. Participants completed a 7-day physical activity recall (Sallis et al. 1995) and a newly developed African-American Female Cultural Beliefs of Physical Activity Questionnaire (i.e., socio-cultural beliefs, physical activity health risks, daily activity as physical activity, menstruation as a barrier, health benefits of physical activity) and other measures to examine general cognitive beliefs. A subset of 30 participants also wore a Caltrac accelerometers. Adolescents and the primary caregivers displayed almost 2 times higher daily expenditure of kilocalories measured from the accelerometers than computed based on the 7-day self-report measure. Neither general beliefs and attitudes nor cultural beliefs and attitudes significantly contributed to the amount of physical activity engaged in by the adolescents. In contrast to the adolescent's findings, the general beliefs and attitudes and the cultural beliefs and attitudes did significantly contribute to the amount of physical activity engaged in by the primary female adult caregiver. These results support the importance of considering measurement issues of physical activity and cultural beliefs as determinants of physical activity in African-American female youth and their primary female caregiver. Future research should carefully administer self-report measures of physical activity or use objective assessments in measuring physical activity, incorporate more culturally sensitive beliefs, and include family influences when developing interventions to increase physical activity levels among African-American females.
