This study aims to examine the applications of the ancient Chinese music genre, Nanguan, in contemporary composer Wen Loong-Hsing's three works: A Piece Without Title, Multiphonic Fragment of Sounds , and Thousand Sounds to be as One. A Piece Without Title is composed for a Chinese silk and bamboo ensemble, the suona and a percussion group. Multiphonic Fragment of Sounds is also composed for a silk and bamboo ensemble, and Thousand Sounds to be as One is composed for a gong and drum ensemble. The researcher's objective is to present descriptive analyses, which include aspects of Chinese philosophy and aesthetics, ancient Chinese music traditions, Nanguan and Western European music. Three major backgrounds of the study, Chinese philosophy and aesthetics, ancient Chinese music traditions and Nanguan are discussed with the purpose of incorporating these concepts into the analyses. The result of the study demonstrates Wen Loong-Hsing's incorporation of diverse musical resources from ancient Chinese aesthetics and music traditions with contemporary techniques.
