摘要

This study of the history, life-ways, and cultural legacy of African Americans in Atlantic City from 1850 to 1940, offers fresh insights from previously untapped primary materials. My research highlights the early Free Black population who lived and worked in the seashore region of southern New Jersey. It introduces new evidence to corroborate nineteenth-century population schedules by utilizing the manuscript census for the purpose of historical analysis. This study concentrates on the inside views of historical actors who did not create written records of their experiences. By incorporating my findings from various archival collections, historical scholarship, manuscript records, and oral histories, this work has broadened our understanding of the historic formation and enterprising developments at the roots of Atlantic City's African American community.; Despite its relatively diminutive size, Atlantic City historically, was one of the few areas in the United States where African Americans in any substantial numbers lived on or near the ocean front for 150 years. Within the context of an urban-resort community study, my findings are significant to New Jersey scholarship because they reveal the identities of Black Property Owners from 1850 to 1870 for both Atlantic City and Atlantic County, with emphasis on Egg Harbor Township, Galloway Township, and Hamilton Township. Briefly, migration studies for the period 1880 to 1900 will be enlightened because my findings produced both a statistical perspective and a comprehensive demographic profile of the population. The fundamental premise guiding this historical analysis is that the formation of a seaside resort community in an urban environment had challenges atypical and distinct from other African American communities in general. The relevance of this work will fill major voids in the literature and pave the way for new interpretations.
