This study investigated differences in meaning in life, motivation to find meaning in life, and locus-of-control among selected male adolescents in four different types of institutions. The independent variable was the type of institution. There were four levels to this variable: correctional facility, private school, rural public school, and urban public school. The dependent variables were meaning in life (measured by the Purpose in Life Test, or PIL), motivation to find meaning in life (measured by the Seeking of Noetic Goals Test, or SONG), and locus-of-control (measured by the Children's Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External scale, or NSL-O-C).;One hundred twenty males aged 15--17 years participated, 30 males from each institution. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that there were no significant differences among the scores of the four groups for each dependent variable. The mean scores on the PIL for all groups did fall within the indecisive range concerning purpose in life. The mean scores on the SONG for all groups were higher than the cutting score. The mean scores for each group on the locus-of-control scale were more external than the scores provided for 11th-grade and 12th-grade students; two of the samples were more internal than the 10th-grade norm, and two were more external.;The results suggested: (a) these adolescents did not have a definite purpose in life nor did they exhibit a definite existential vacuum; (b) these adolescents were motivated to find meaning in life; and (c) most of these adolescents exhibited an external orientation. Programs, activities, and interventions should be placed in these types of institutions to address issues pertaining to meaning, motivation, and locus-of-control to contribute to the positive development of adolescents.
