The zooplankton community of an oxbow lake located in Angelina County, Texas was studied monthly for a period of one year. The study began in March 1999 and lasted until February 2000. This oxbow lake is dependent upon the flooding regimes of the Angelina River as a water source since the lake has relatively no watershed from which it can receive water during rains. The results of the study indicated the lake was experiencing stressful conditions for much of the year. Several indicators were evidence of this condition. The first evidence was the fact rotifers dominated the community for most of the year. The second indication was the individual species that comprised the community. The third indication was the high number of cyclopoid copepods in relation to number of calanoid copepods. Finally, there was an extremely high numerical density of organisms in the lake for the majority of the year. With all of this evidence, it is apparent the lake is highly eutrophic. This probably is caused by the high amount of organic matter that is distributed throughout the lake from runoff and overhanging vegetation. Conditions were made worse by the drought conditions present for the duration of the study.
