摘要

Object-oriented database management systems (OODBMS) attempt to integrate database. and object-oriented (OO) technologies. However, a single data model has not emerged from this approach. Rather several research prototypes and commercial products have been developed using different models. These models reflect the particulars of their implementation, the programming language used and the set of applications they are targeted for. The thesis defines and illustrates a data model named Object Category (OC) that is based on the OO concepts. The data model is independent of any programming language, is suited to any general application, and is easily derived from an EER diagram. OC data model introduces the concept of category, which is a collection of object instances. The use of collections by an OODBMS implies a clear and easy way of manipulating persistent objects that is consistent with the concept of database and resembles the operations of insert, retrieve and remove objects.
