摘要

Prior research indicates that recurrent headache sufferers may differ from headache-free controls in the ways they appraise and cope with stress and pain. In addition, there is some research to suggest that headache sufferers may physiologically respond to pain and stress differently than headache-free individuals. The purpose of the present study was to investigate how migraine headache sufferers, tension-headache sufferers, and headache-free controls differ in their appraisal, coping, and cardiovascular responses to a cognitive and a physical laboratory stressor.;Participants were recruited by screening undergraduate introductory psychology classes. Participants were then categorized into a migraine headache, a tension-type headache, and a headache-free control group based on their responses to a screening questionnaire, a headache diagnostic interview, and a computer evaluation of their interview responses. All of the individuals in the headache groups met International Headache Society criteria for migraine or tension-type headache. Sixty-six female students participated in a single laboratory session during which cardiovascular responses (i.e. systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, stroke volume, and total peripheral resistance) to a cognitive (simulated speech stressor) and a physical (forehead cold pressor task) stressor were recorded. In addition, participants reported their subjective appraisals of the tasks and completed several self-report measures assessing coping strategies utilized in response to the tasks.;Results indicated that migraine and tension-type headache sufferers rated the forehead cold pressor task as significantly more painful compared to headache-free participants. Migraine headache sufferers also reported the use of more maladaptive coping strategies, such as problem avoidance, wishful thinking, self-criticism, and catastrophizing, in managing pain and stress outside of the laboratory. However, there was no evidence to support the hypothesis that headache sufferers differed from headache-free controls in terms of cardiovascular responses.
