The thesis discusses the results of a study of elemental characteristics of milled coals, power plant ashes, stack emissions emitted from two stations burning subbituminous coal and both using electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) for the capture of fly ash. The study explores the variation of the role of cold-side and hot-side ESPs in the capture of elements, particularly the potentially hazardous substances (PHS).;Specifically, it deals with the distribution of elements, particularly those of environmental concern and interest collected during a study of these power plants.;Qualitative experimental research was used to determine the following: (1) What are the elemental characteristics of feed coals, bottom and fly ashes? (2) What is the rate of emission of elements, particularly PHS from the stacks of the two stations? (3) Do the emitted elements have any adverse effect on environment? (4) What is the role of cold-side and hot-side ESPs on the capture of elements?
