摘要

Sex allocation theory, as a reinterpretation of Bateman's principle, predicts that male success is limited by access to mates (pollinator attraction), while female success is limited by resources (fruit and seed production). This research was designed to address these predictions within an evolutionary context. First, to determine whether floral characters and the breeding system could respond to selection in Solanum carolinense, I performed a quantitative genetics experiment to determine the heritability of and genetic correlations between floral traits. Then, to determine whether floral characters affect sex-specific reproductive success, I designed a field experiment that elucidated the relationship between floral characters and realized male and female success under natural pollination conditions.; The sizes of flower parts are heritable in this species, and so flower size can respond to selection; however, positive genetic correlations among the sizes of floral parts indicate that flower shape is not likely to change. Flower number is also heritable, as is the proportion of male flowers produced by a plant. In the field experiment, flower size was shown to have a positive influence on reproductive success gained through female function, but a negative effect on reproductive success gained through male function. Flower number had a positive effect on both sex fUnctions, but higher proportions of male flowers, while increasing male success, caused a decline in female success within individuals. Differences in phenotype among individuals therefore lead to variation in their sex-specific success, which affects their functional gender.; In toto, these experiments indicate that sex allocation can affect sex-specific reproductive success in Solanum carolinense, and that there is the potential for the evolution of gender specialization in this species, which may lead to future changes in the breeding system. In addition, these results do not agree with some aspects of sex allocation theory, since the production of large, attractive structures may be more important to female than male fitness in this species.
