Interorganizational relationship structuration and dissolution: A study of strategic alliances in semiconductor start-up manufacturing.

This study focuses on the issues of interorganizational relationship structuration and dissolution. My primary research objectives are: (1) develop a process model of interorganizational relationship structuration and dissolution that integrates major perspectives from organization theories with structuration theory; and (2) empirically test the model on the strategic alliances created by semiconductor start-up manufacturing firms.; The structuration framework developed in this study views an interorganizational relationship as a node that is structured by involved organizations. Building and maintaining such a node is the ongoing production and reproduction of the relationship structures, i.e. relationship structuring. The structures are rules and resources that govern relationship structuring. The duality of structure states that the structures are both the outcomes of previous relationship structuring and the predicaments of future relationship structuring. It is argued that the relational adversity determined by the nature of relationship tasks determines the degree of effort and energy organizations will use in relationship structuring, and this intensity of relationship structuring determines the rate at which relationship-specific rules and resources are structured and accumulated. Relationship dissolutions depend on this process of relationship structuring.; Event history analyses on the strategic alliances created by semiconductor start-ups founded in the 1980s significantly support the hypotheses derived from this framework. The findings suggest the dialectical relationship between the intensity of alliance structuration and the time-dependent possibility of alliance dissolution. Generally, alliances that are more intensely structured have higher dissolution hazards in early years because the task conditions are more adversarial toward relationship structuring. But they have lower dissolution hazards than less intensely structured alliances after a certain period of time, when the structured resources accumulated at a higher rate overcome the disadvantages associated with the more difficult relationship structuring. By controlling the effect of change in resource dependence on alliance dissolutions, the results show the pivotal role of relationship structuring in addition to widely used resource dependence explanations.; This study enriches theories on interorganizational relationships by introducing a time-dependent logic to explanations of interorganizational relationship dynamics. While the current strategic alliance literature is dominated by perspectives explaining alliance formation, this study indicates much can be understood about alliances by contemplating the issues of alliance building and dissolution.
