The purpose of this thesis is to provide a detailed overview of high energy density (HED) capacitor technology and to examine different applications. More detail and focus will be given to the possible use of these devices in Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) standard IC memory card applications.;The capacitor's structure, charge storage mechanism, and low frequency computer circuit model, will be introduced. The effects on the device's electrical parameters due to size and high frequency will be examined in order to determine application limits and compatibility.;Typical HED capacitor applications will be reviewed, with particular attention being paid to the memory backup application. A structured approach to the solution of IC memory card HED problems will be given, with a practical numerical example. The major benefits to such an application will be the elimination of the secondary rechargeable battery, improved reliability, and a solution to the harmful problem of rechargeable battery disposal. Finally an innovative "ultra" low profile HED capacitor design will be presented as a possible solution to the IC memory card height requirement.
