The problem. The problem of this study was to identify and describe what the organized youth gardening program at the Hilltop Garden/Nature Center in Bloomington, Indiana, meant to the participants in terms of the educational, leisure, and social aspects of the program.; Procedures. The research methodology for this study was Naturalistic Inquiry. Data was collected during the 1988 youth gardening program through observations, interviews, and from a review of non-human data sources. After observing the program and participants for several weeks, nine individuals were selected as respondents for the study. The respondents came from both the Youth Gardener group, ages 7 through 12, and from the Junior Board Member group, ages 13 through 16. Formative and summative member checks were conducted as a part of the study.; Findings. Five major findings and 17 additional findings emerged as a result of the study. The findings indicated that the Youth Gardeners and Junior Board Members valued the program for different reasons. The Youth Gardeners valued the opportunity "to do things" and "to have interesting experiences" above all else. The Junior Board Members valued the program primarily for social reasons. When asked about the program, the respondents basically replied: I like it, its fun, you get to do things, the people are nice, and you learn things.; Conclusions. Participating in the youth gardening program was a positive experience for the respondents. The success of the program could be attributed largely to a talented staff who effectively met many of the respondents' developmental needs.
