摘要

This research describes and analyses funeral customs, rituals and celebrations of Moba clans in Dapaong, Togo. The work is especially concerned with the traditions of the land holding clan in Dapaong, the Diyob. Special attention is paid to those individuals responsible for the direction and control of rituals and commemorative ceremonies. The author maintains that an esthetic of funerals exits in Dapaong, that the events can be described and analysed from the point-of-view of the directors and organisers, that those organisers have a strategic interest in producing a well-done funeral ceremony, and that a successfully completed funeral cycle results in a reaffirmation of community and a redefinition of social roles with the host of the funeral taking an enhanced social status.
