Well designed handling systems are crucial for reduced costs and increased profits. A vital part of the material handling system design process is the selection and configuration of material handling equipment. The equipment selection problem involves a number of factors many of which require subjective assessment as they are difficult to quantify.;This thesis describes a knowledge-based approach for addressing the major factors that influence material handling equipment selection. The compilation of the knowledge base from a review of traditional checklists and published literature is discussed. A prototype knowledge-based system that addresses over 30 equipment types for intra- and inter-departmental movement of discrete parts in a manufacturing facility is described. Useful features of the consultation system designed to aid industrial engineers in a more thorough evaluation of the material handling task and equipment possibilities are described and system enhancements are discussed.
