Hardware compilation is the process of automatically synthesizing a low-level structural description of a circuit from a high-level description of the circuit's behaviour. This thesis examines the issues involved in the automated design of microcoded controllers for circuits generated by hardware compilers. Issues examined include the separation of control and data paths, hardware implementation of subroutines, controller partitioning, and distributed control.;A prototype program for automated microcode generation is described. This program generates horizontal microcode given a description of the algorithm to be performed, the circuit to perform the algorithm, and a library of hardware cells used by the circuit. The program also performs horizontal microcode compaction to reduce the control memory area.
