A new method is developed for minimizing digital storage and transmission requirements for speech signals with minimum perceived degradation of the reconstructed signal. The method compresses the digital signals by comparing the data with prior received data to detect repetition. When repetition is detected, a code indication of the period of the repetition and the duration of repetition is inserted in a temporary storage. Information is restored utilizing a decoding network responsive to the inserted codes which cause reinsertion of the repetitions.;Although this method is primarly concerned with conserving the storage space by not storing information that is unnecessary or that can be easily reproduced such as intervals of time during which no information is supplied, or such as repetitive input information, it also eliminates unnecessary pauses between words and sentences.
