Statement of the Problem. The major problem in this study was to identify the technological developments through the past 110 years which had an impact on the blue crab industry in the Chesapeake Bay region.;The Population. Interviewees were selected which would enable the writer to gather accurate information about the technology of the blue crab industry during the period from 1873 to the present.;Summary of the Procedure. A review of the related literature and research resulted from written newspaper and magazine articles. Visits to libraries around the two-state area, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the University of Maryland Institute for Estuarine Studies, and the Maritime Museums in Norfolk, Virginia and St. Michael's, Maryland provided information for Chapter II, and much information for Chapter III. Interviews of watermen, former watermen, and various packers around the Chesapeake Bay provided information for Chapter III. The findings were disclosed, conclusions stated, and recommendations for further study proposed.;Conclusions. Based on the data, the following conclusions were made: (1) The blue crab industry would not have developed prior to 1873 because of the previous lack of needed technology. (2) Great variations in crab catches from year to year remain a mystery. (3) Improvements in technology have changed the blue crab industry in at least three ways: (a) the ability and capacity to catch crabs has increased; (b) improvements in equipment have made the capturing of blue crabs less physically demanding; and (c) markets have been vastly widened to points as far away as California.;Statement of the Purpose and Need. The purposes of this study were to: (a) provide scholars interested in the Chesapeake Bay's blue crab industry one document which is a chronicle of that industry from its inception in 1873 until the present, 1983; (b) provide an historical background for commerical fisheries curriculums and programs now being taught or planned; (c) promote a better understanding of watermen; and (d) promote a sense of pride among watermen about their past.
