摘要

Academic novels, those whose focus, characters, and action revolve around academic concerns, can provide important insights about higher education. Fifty such novels, portraying faculty or administrative viewpoints, have been selected and their higher education related contents classified in such a way as to make this resource more accessible.;An index provides the following data concerning each novel: author; publication date; focus--administrative or faculty; discipline of protagonist; type of institutional setting; density of emphasis on higher educational concerns; type--serious or comedy/satire; view of academe--positive or negative; a list identifying which of the 28 subjects concerning higher education are found in that novel.;Research on the American and British academic novel, and on the administrative/business novel--analogous to the academic novel but relating to business and industrial organizations--is reported as follows: (1) The novel from a literary standpoint--literary quality, characteristics of authors, style, common themes. (2) The novel as documentary--the image of higher education, its academic characters, and their roles as perceived by the reader. (3) The novel as credible resource--the accuracy of the image of higher education presented in the academic novel, and the appropriateness of utilizing fiction as an investigative tool in the study of any discipline.;Recommendations are offered for the further research of academic literature--the academic novel, the academic mystery, the nonfiction novel, the autobiography, the short story collection, and drama.;Twenty-eight subjects usually dealt with in the study of higher education are identified along with the titles of those novels which deal with each subject. Subjects are: academic freedom, administrative styles, administrator as scholar or executive, selection of administrators, alumni, business values in academe, the community of scholars, curricular concerns, ethics, faculty and administrative relationships, faculty participation in governance, philanthropic foundations, instruction, the misfit in academe, unsophisticated perceptions of academe, personnel administration, the uses of power, public relations, purposes of higher education, research and publication, social structure of academe, student affairs, student and faculty relationships, student unrest, promotion and tenure, trustees, and women in higher education.
