Oil spill bioremediation is based on the premise that a large percentage of oil components are readily degradable by bacteria. Biostimulation, one of two main approaches to bioremediation, (bioaugmentation is the other), is accomplished by stimulating the growth of indigenous bacteria with the addition of nutrients, cometabolites, or other reagents. Soil, taken from the water's edge of the coastal wetlands south of Bayou La Batre in southern Alabama, was contaminated with a Louisiana light sweet crude oil. Commercially available organic and inorganic fertilizers, a cometabolite (common table sugar or sucrose), and a dispersant (CorexitRTM 9500A) were then added in different combinations to the oil contaminated soil to stimulate bacterial growth, to increase the bioavailability of the oil, and to accelerate the removal of crude oil from the contaminated soil. We found that, although there is treatment effectiveness, we could not conclude there is a significant difference between treatment effects.
