The left ventricle (LV) pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs to the rest of the body through systemic circulation. Characterizing the LV geometry, its motion, and the ventricular flow is critical in assessing the heart's health to provide important clinical diagnostic and prognostic information. An automated method has been developed in this work to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) models of the LV using multiple-axis echocardiography (echo). The concept is based on a generalized approach so that the number or type (long-axis or short-axis) of sectional data is not constrained. Pre-recorded echo data video files from multiple axis sections are processed to compute spatial nodes on the surface of the LV. Methods for spatial and temporal smoothening are incorporated such that the volume and the flow rate, calculated based on the left ventricular motion, are smooth. The reconstruction methods are devised and the models are output in a standard VTK format, to be easily incorporated into numerical simulations. The 3D LV model can be used for better understanding of the ventricular motion and their direct incorporation into the simulation framework provides a powerful tool for studying left ventricular flows.
