摘要

While television genre may be perceived as primarily a classificatory or promotional device, the genre attributes of a fictional television texts - their structure, themes, and aesthetics - affect the way that discourses of cultural difference are circulated in narrative television texts. Through the extensive comparative analysis of 13 post-network television programs across three genres (the crime drama, medical drama, and teen drama) this dissertation develops an approach to the analysis of large scale television texts in order to establish how ideologies of difference are communicated in the symbolic arena of contemporary network television. An extensive quantitative and textual analysis of 2,058 episodes is performed in order to identify the patterns of representation of minority or marginalized groups including sexual and religious minorities, pregnant and infertile women, and liminal generational positions. This study demonstrates that specific genre elements, like archetypal character roles and specific genre-identified narratives, have a direct effect on how narratives of cultural difference are conveyed across media texts. The role of motive in crime drama, the medical survival rates in medical dramas, and the romantic narrative arc in teen dramas are all genre attributes that are deployed across texts within a genre in ways that shape representation. Comparatively, across texts and genres, results show that narrative and structural elements of genres powerfully impact the representation, marginalization, and hierarchization of cultural and identity groups. This dissertation adapts aspects of content analysis to quantify and identify patterns of representation and combines it with interpretive analysis in order to track this relationship between genre, representation, and the production of discourses about cultural difference. I argue that this methodological approach allows for the study of larger scale textual samples and for the identification of textual trends that are dispersed across episodes and distinct narratives. This study demonstrates a close relationship between the ideological and aesthetic attributes of media texts and argues that "value neutral" aesthetic and commercial choices, like the selection or proliferation of a genre, have an important ideological and cultural dimension and impact in relation to representation and the enaction of symbolic power in contemporary post-network television drama.
