Narcissism, Suffering, and Openness to the Other: An Integration of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology, Relational Psychoanalysis, and the Theology of Jurgen Moltmann.
This project is based on the "theology-directed" model of integration (Strawn, 2004, p. 141), with its emphasis on the integration of particular theological and psychological traditions. The theology of Jurgen Moltmann is presented in dialogue with psychoanalytic self psychology and relational psychoanalysis as one example of such engagement. Narcissism, as understood in the self psychology literature, is taken as a "case study" of this integrative endeavor, as narcissistic disorders are an implied source of psychological, social, and spiritual problems in Moltmann's writings. It is argued that when the ethical implications of Moltmann's Trinitarian theology of the crucifixion of Christ are integrated with the theories of psychoanalysis, the result is an enriched conception of the aims and process of psychotherapy. Such a conception may contribute to a more richly integrative personal and professional ethic of care.;Keywords: Psychoanalysis, Jurgen Moltmann, integration, narcissism, openness.
