摘要

Major depression has the highest prevalence of any neuropsychiatric disorder following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Previous empirical research did not explain whether psychopathological conditions after TBI are biological consequences, reactions to cognitive and social dysfunction, or a continuation of pre-existing conditions. Psychological adaptation is determined on how an individual adjusts physiologically, psychologically, and socially to a chronic illness or disease. This quantitative study examined whether memory impairment and executive functions were predictors of post TBI depression, and psychosocial adaptation to traumatic brain injury. A total of 64 participants with chronic TBI enrolled in a New York State Department of Health Medicaid waiver program, for individuals with TBI, completed the Wechsler Memory Scale, Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions-Adult, Neurobehavioral Functioning Inventory, and the Mayo Portland Adaptability Inventory. Regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between the independent variables, memory impairment and executive functions, and the dependent variables depression and adaptation. Executive functions were found to be associated and predictive of post-TBI depression and psychosocial adaptation in chronic TBI. Positive social change will occur as a result of this study regarding the relationship between executive functions, depression, and adaptation in the TBI population. This information will inform professionals on assessment, treatment, and intervention for individuals' with TBI, and their families.
