Infections of the teeth such as degeneration and periodontal disease are prevalent for microbial infections in humans. Controlling microbial oral biofilms is generally attained with the aid of motorized removal of plaque by the use of a toothbrush or floss. Conversely, research has indicated that the standard system of brushing and flossing tooth surfaces is not adequate to attain proper maintenance. Similarly, there is no substantial validation that systematic techniques, such as dentistry care and cleaning; have lowered the occurrences of tooth deterioration. However, such techniques have decreased the level of gingivitis and the amount of plaque. Research has also established the usefulness and efficiency of antibacterial mouthwashes that are comprised of effective components such as sodium fluoride and essential oils (EO) inhibit the development of biofilms and gingivitis when employed with mechanical methods such as brushing and flossing. It has been identified that the use of the medicinal plant Moringa oleifera has the same effect in fighting against oral microbiota, compared to over the counter products that are predominately used. These oral agents add to the effectiveness in controlling oral microbial growth. In some cases, they help to terminate microorganisms by destroying their cell walls and obstructing their enzymatic activity. This study will determine the metabolic activity of oral microorganisms that are prevalent in the oral cavity. L. acidophilus, S. mutans and S. mitis will be grown in polystyrene plates during 18hrs, treated with the following mouthwashes Listerine OriginalRTM, Listerine Cool MintRTM and Moringa oleifera extract. My expected outcome will be that Moringa oleifera extract will have a significant effect on reducing metabolic activity of biofilms.
