Characterization of a Botrytis cinerea ceratoplatanin-like protein, Snod 1.

Secreted proteins are released from Botrytis cinerea to facilitate infection of host plants and are presumed the first factors to initiate pathogenicity. LC-MS mass spectrometry detected 72 distinct proteins in B. cinerea BO5.10 secretions after exposure to full red strawberry extracts. One of the most abundantly expressed is a ceratoplatanin-like protein, Snod 1, which was further characterized with this work. Results show that 1.5 nmol of FPLC purified Snod 1 produced lesions on full red strawberry receptacles within 24 hours after application. With quantitative PCR (QPCR), Snod 1 transcripts showed a two-fold increase in expression with respect to the 18S rRNA internal control after 16 hrs exposure to full red strawberries. The production of lesions and the late increase in transcripts levels are important clues of the contribution of this protein toward the pathogenicity of the fungus. These results support a possible role for the B. cinerea Snod 1 as a bioactive protein.
