摘要

Many workers migrated to the West Coast during World War II to seek employment in the defense industries. Many of those workers were women, African Americans, and other minority groups who were able to gain employment during the war because of extreme labor shortages. Many workers seeking employment along the West Coast were employed in the Richmond Shipyards. Large numbers of workers were needed to build the numerous warships that were deployed during the war. This massive move by thousands of workers during the war forever changed the employment landscape of America.;The purpose of this research study was to understand the impact of diversity upon shipyard workers working in the Richmond Shipyards during World War II. Thousands of workers were actively recruited from across America to work in the Richmond Shipyards without regard to race or gender. During this time shipyard workers worked in integrated work groups. Many women joined the industrial workforce for the first time. There was no segregation of services by race or ethnicity, and shipyard workers and their families received integrated health care services.;The use of qualitative research methods was selected for this study to gauge the impact of diversity upon the lives of the shipyard workers. Qualitative narrative interviews were used to capture the lived experiences of workers during this time. Archival data were available to support and augment the narrative interviews. Eight workers who worked at the Richmond Shipyards during World War II were interviewed. Their ages ranged from the late 80s to the mid-90s. The sharing of their stories and experiences may expand the body of knowledge about a unique time in history when individuals from all social classes, backgrounds, and races worked together during World War II.
