摘要

The Book of Ingenious Devices is a collection of works that represent the composer's explorations in developing new sources of expressive meaning in unconventional sonic territories. As a whole, the pieces included in this portfolio present a coherent harmonic language by using different sources of microtonality. This pursuit is expressed through different dialectical relations especially between the past and the present, east and west, the natural and the constructed. This collection of works puts these polarities in an intense dialogue while simultaneously maintaining the tension between them.;The first piece Alliteratio is a meditation on a piece by Guillaume Machaut, taking both the structure and the melodic fragments of the original piece as references. In Anaclasis, the solo tuba is treated like a super instrument where it triggers almost all the materials of the orchestra. Beyond Time, for voice and trio, explores different temporalities overlapped onto each other. While quite different in character, both The Book of Ingenious Devices and In the Temporal Gardens focus on the tension between mechanical and organic textures. Requiem pour une Terre Perdue, for ensemble, is based on the tension created by the clash between the equal-tempered scale, represented by symmetric scales and the harmonic series. The string trio, Teraneler, consists of two short pieces. Both of them use harmonies influenced by Byzantine Chant but they take on quite a different character at the end. In the last piece, Three Imaginary Spaces after Hadid , sonic constructions based on overtone series, symmetric scalar structures and doppler effect create their own sonic space while constantly clashing with each other.
