The purpose of this study is to compare early bone healing around different experimental implant surfaces and to evaluate the role of calcium phosphate-coated implants surface as it relates to Bone Implant Contact.;An experimental HA grit blasted and dual acid etched surface, (BAE-1) was compared to an experimental HA grit blasted and dual acid etched surface treated with nanometer-scale crystals of HA (BAE-2). Both experimental implants surfaces were implanted onto the tibias of four New Zealand white rabbits. The animals were scarified at 1,6, 21 and 90 days after implant surgery. Histological analyses were performed at the healing responses of the BAE-1 surface as compared to the BAE-2 surface, and observed at 1, 6, 21 and 90 days. Semi-Quantitative Morphology assessments were scored for three parameters: presence and extent of blood clot, mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), and presence of necrotic bone or osteocytic in the native cortical bone. Quantitative morphology assessment provided measurements of bone-implant-contact (BIC), number of bone multicellular units, average penetration of BMUs, and maximum penetration of BMUs that were manually made using Image computer software.;Microscopic evaluation of the implants in the tibiae of white rabbits at 1, 6, 21, and 90 days showed that the BAE-2 implant seemed to promote better mesenchymal stem cell migration and attachment to the implant surface at early time points when compared to the BAE-1 implant. The presence of MSC on the BAE-2 surface was recorded only after one day of healing. Both the BAE-1 and BAE-2 implants appeared to have stable anchorage into the tibial cortex in this rabbit study. The overall BIC for the BAE-2 implant was 53.1% higher than the BIC for the BAE-1 implant at 21 days and 20% higher at 90 days of healing.;The presence of MSC on the BAE-2 surface at early time points seemed to promote a faster healing process of the new bone around the implant surface when compared to the BAE-1 surface.;Although the BAE-2 implant surface appeared to provide better bone-implant contact with healthy bone remodeling, further research need to be carried out in this field.
