Diuretics were developed for the treatment of sodium and water retention, and to relieve symptoms and eliminate edema in the congested patients with heart failure. However, there are concerns that long-term, frequent diuretic usage can cause adverse effects. Studies suggest that the chronic use of higher doses of diuretics was associated with significantly increased risk for mortality in some patients with heart failure. This finding has not yet been evaluated in large scale clinical trials. This review examines the relationship between chronic use of high doses of diuretics and patients with heart failure.
