In tertiary language curriculum, emphasis is put on training of integrative reading and writing and basic usage learning is always neglected. This paper, on the basis of the results of a study on a Chinese proficiency test, highlights the importance of basic usage learning in tertiary language curriculum. The results show that Hong Kong undergraduates performed worse in the discrete usage test than in the integrative reading and writing tests. In the light of the results obtained, we suggest that basic usage learning should be strengthened in tertiary language curriculum.
