Vernacular settlements become frequently studied by Western architects and urban planners since the 1950s.In following years the research ideas,perspectives and skills in this area developed constantly,and many of them were imported in China recently. The current research achievements on China＇s vernacular settlements are great,but still not comprehensive enough compared with the world-wide findings.This paper aims to summarize the mainstream research framework and progress on vernacular settlements in Western context,including not only their definition and categories,but also the（physical and non-physical） factors to decide their forms.Based on this framework,it then comments current research progress in China,and points out possible directions of future development.%建筑学和城市研究视野中,对乡土聚落及其形态的关注自20世纪50年代起已成为西方学术界发展最迅猛的领域之一,新的研究视角、思路和方法不断涌现。近年来,中国乡土聚落研究也逐渐成为学术界热潮,西方式的研究视角、思路和方法也被逐步引入,但其现有研究成果和西方学术界深厚的积累相比,尚不够全面和深入。本文基于对丰富的外文资料的阅读,力图对国外学界在乡土聚落形态及其影响因素的研究进展方面进行较为全面的总结。这些研究进展主要包括：对＂乡土聚落＂的概念、范畴和分类的深入探讨,对乡土聚落形态影响因素的发掘,以及各类物质和非物质因素对聚落形态影响方式的分析。基于这个框架,结合对中国国内乡土聚落形态研究的回顾,本文旨在对国内现有研究成果作出简要的评析,并提出今后进一步发展的主要方向。
