On September 20, France voted on a referendum determining whether Western Europe strides toward or steps back from closer political and economic union. The final official result in France’s referendum showed 51.05 per cent of voters approved the Maastricht Treaty. Of 38333696 registered voters, 13172710 voted "yes" to European political, economic and monetary union and 12632816 voted "no." The turnout was 69.68 per cent.
