The naphthenic acids in petroleum cause corrosion problem and degrade qualities of products during being processed. Detailed analyses of the acids are difficult due to their complicacy. A sample was analyzed by field desorption-mass spectrometry (FDMS) , and the components were characterizated on the basis of group type and carbon number distributions. It was found that the naphthenic acids in the sample are mainly composed of one-ring and two-ring naphthenic acids.
