Contract management mode gradually becomes a general way to manage university presi-dents′salary and welfare treatment in most American public universities.It does not only promote the professionalization of president management in American public universities,but also make the univer-sity president a profession with high income,high requirement and high risk.The board of the public university attracts excellent presidents by high salary and generous welfare.Meanwhile,the board re-stricts the professional behavior of presidents by compulsory requirement and evaluation mechanism written in contracts to ensure that the presidents devote themselves to work and achieve remarkable results .The high-risk characteristic of the profession as Amenican public university presidents is dem-onstrated in two aspects.First,there is still considerable proportion of university presidents that have not signed a written contract with the board,which lacks potential and practical constraint and guar-antee.Second,the board of public universities generally sign a written contract which retains the dis-cretion with presidents,and this remains a great threaten to them.The American public university contract management mode provides inspirations for China in such regards as to build a public univer-sity president occupation guarantee system,to put forward a reasonable public university president salary standard,and to establish a corresponding supervision system.%合同制管理方式逐渐成为美国各公立大学管理校长薪资福利待遇的通用方式，它推动了美国公立大学校长职业化进程，并使大学校长成为一个高收入、高要求与高风险并存的职业。公立大学董事会通过高薪资、高福利吸引优秀校长，同时通过在合同中提出义务要求与考核机制规约校长职业行为，确保校长能全身心地投入工作并取得显著成效。美国公立大学校长职业的高风险则表现在两个方面：仍有相当大比例的大学校长没有和学校董事会签订书面合同，缺乏潜在的和实际上的约束和保障；公立大学董事会在与校长签订的合同中普遍保留了自由裁量权，对大学校长的职业保障是一种极大的威胁。美国公立大学合同制管理方式对我国构建公立大学校长职业保障体制、明确合理的公立大学校长薪资福利待遇标准及建立相应的监督制度具有一定的启示。
