in her novel Chinamen,Maxine Hong Kingston imagined her family history and in this way misread Robinson Crusoe.By doing so,she portrayed an industrious image of the forefathers of Chinese Americans, and represented the struggles and hardship these forefathers underwent during their early years of living in America;in Tripmaster Monkey, she created a new image of Chinese Americans integrating Chinese and western cultural elements, based upon the character of Monkey King in a Chinese classic novel Journey to the West, which shows her thinking on the ethnical identity of Chinese Americans. Both of the two stories convey her reflection on the ethnical identity of Chinese Americans. Therefore, this paper will interpret her misreading of the two images in detail, explore how Maxine Hong Kingston responded to the ideas of the mainstream American society on the ethnical identity of Chinese Americans, and finally demonstrate how she built in her own way the imagination of the ethnical identity of Chinese Americans.%汤亭亭在《中国佬》中以家史想像的创作方式误读了传统小说《鲁宾逊漂流记》,刻画了吃苦耐劳的华裔祖先形象,追溯了华裔祖先早年来到美国的奋斗史;在《孙行者》中,她又以中国古典小说《西游记》中美猴王形象为基础塑造了一个融中西方文化基因于一体的华裔形象,借助这一人物传达了她对华裔美国人民族身份的思考。
